I wonder, are you using the smudge tool? In his wrist it looks like you are. And brushes at 100% opacity or are they lower? I tend to use hard brushes at about 25-35% for shading over a solid color. And each of his hairs done individually!
How big are you working on this, at least 200% of this size I would guess? I would think you must be, to get the detail in the piercings.
Do you sample from the photo or just pick colors off the palette?
This is, of course, amazing work and that's why I have to ask!! ^_^

Many red devils ran from my heart/ And out upon the page,
They were so tiny/ The pen could mash them.
And many struggled in the ink.
It was strange/ To write in this red muck

in some parts i am [like his wrist], although i don;t really like to use it too much. i always use 100% for brushes, because i;m too lazy to change the opacity back and forth whenever i have to, lol. and for his hair i use a 1px brush.
this is the actual size of the file, but i zoom in to about 200% or 300% for details.
i try not to be lazy and just use the eyedropper tool all over the place, but there were some colors that were impossible for me to find on my own, so i used it then.
thanks for all your questions; i hope i answered them well enough for you ^__^

DeviantART is counting down to its 100 millionth deviation! Join in on the fun and take a look back at some of the most noteworthy deviations we've seen along the way. The deviant who uploads the 100 millionth deviation could win a special prize, too. Hurry, we're going to hit the 100 million mark soon!
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
